Liberty Elementary is a new 550 student pre-kindergarten through 5th grade school on the east side of Columbus. Project challenges included extensive site analysis with multiple building designs fitting a large building onto a tight suburban site, achieving LEED Gold status with extensive green site measures including bioswales and reflective concrete, a high performance geothermal heat pump system, extensive daylighting meeting LEED requirements, shared tutorial rooms, extended learning areas, separate bus and car drop offs and entrances, flexible construction for re-configurable class room and corridors, open stairs that expand into extended learning areas and encourage collaboration, a second floor extended learning area with its own exterior terrace, light filled spacious high ceiling corridors, double height library and cafeteria with large stage, playful exterior with multiple colors of brick and combinations of window sizes and placements. The library, gym and cafeteria can be separated from the classroom wing for use after hours by the public.
